Comments: Paperback from University of California Press; New Ed edition. This is a book of standards, a theory of film. The greater part of it is an adaptation of Film als Kunst, first pubilshed in 1932 in the original German and in English by Faber and Faber in 1933. Arnheim's provocative thesis is that the peculiar virtues of film as art derive from an exploitation of the limitations of the medium: the absence of sound, the absence of color, the lack of 3-dimensional depth. Silent-film artists made virtues of these necessities and were on their way to developing a distinctive art form. Mechanical advancement has led to greater realism and a corresponding loss in artistry. This sounds like just the book to use if you want to get into independent filmmaking, on the cheap, aiming for the artistry of the silent film era. I truly believe that the time is ripe for a renaissance of this old method of filmmaking. Maybe just for YouTube shorts. This copy has clean text, a little wear.

Comments: Stated 1st printing. Hardcover with dj from Farrar, Straus & Giroux (NY:1983), this is Lost in the Cosmos: The Last Self-Help Book by Walker Percy. The dj has some chips along the edges, some rubbing, but is not price-clipped and is unmarked. The gray boards with black cloth overlay and silver lettering are unmarked and in Fine condition. On the inside cover, there is a ragged paper end that is a separation of the binding at the front hinge, between the front endpaper and the half title. The pages are clean. This non-fiction book was Walker Percy's answer to the 1980's fad for self-help books. It is maddening to say the least. Fascinating also. Illustrated with line drawings.
