This novel by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, published in serial form in the magazine The Forerunner in 1911, portrays a multigeneration group of women who flee New England and migrate to Colorado, where they help establish a thriving new town founded on many of Gilman's principles of socialized housekeeping, professionalized child care, and economic independence for white, middle-class women. An early feminist novel by a pioneering social theorist, writer and activist. Lengthy introduction, with bountiful notes, by Jennifer S. Tuttle who also edited the novel. Quality book.

Comments: Different cover, same edition. Trade paperback from Harvest (division of Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich), this is The Four Loves by C. S. Lewis. The only date on the copyright page is the 1960 copyright date but this must be a later copy, as it has an ISBN number (not around until 1970). It's probably from the 1970's as it cost 2.45 when originally published. The pages are clean but age-darkened. There are some pages that were dog-earrned at the corners but I flattened them. The cover has two spine creases but no other, and the edges have a little wear. The DJ is yellow with black and green frame and black and green lettering; dj has chipping at edges and mild water staining at top, brodart clear cover protects the dj from further wear and hides the flaws somewhat. The green boards with dark orange lettering are in very nice condition with one light smudge on front that is same green as the cover, barely noticable. The pages are clean but age-tanned. The binding is tight. Nice copy of probably First Edition (1949). {chk dups}
